Online MBA and executive MBA compared

Short answer

Online MBA vs executive MBA compares a defined mode with a label. Online is a mode UGC recognises course by course. Executive is not a term in UGC rules, so its work experience rules and format are each college's choice. Ask how it is taught.

Key takeaways

  • A mode and a labelOnline is a mode in UGC rules. Executive is not mentioned in them at all.
  • How it is taught decidesFace to face counts as regular study. Fully online counts as online.
  • Entry rules varyUGC sets no work experience or entrance exam rule for an online MBA.

Online MBA vs executive MBA: what the label means

If you are a working manager choosing between these two, start with what each word means in the rules. UGC's 2020 rules name three modes: regular, distance and online. Online is defined as learning delivered fully over the internet.

Executive is not one of them. Work experience rules, weekend classes, a shorter length and a higher fee are each college's own design choices.

So two courses called executive MBA can be very different. One may be weekend classes on campus, another fully online. The label alone tells you little.

This guide looks at the label first, then at how each one is taught, tested and priced.

  • Online MBAA mode UGC defines, recognised course by course for each session.
  • Executive MBAA college's own label. Its format and rules vary from one college to the next.

Entry rules compared

Nothing in UGC's rules requires work experience or an entrance exam for an online MBA. Where a college asks for a CAT, MAT, XAT or CMAT score, that is its own admission rule.

An executive MBA may set a higher bar, such as work experience, and it sets that bar itself. So the only reliable answer is the one the college gives you in writing.

An online MBA does need a bachelor's degree, the entry level UGC sets for a postgraduate course taught online or by distance. You also need a DEB-ID before you enrol.

How each one is taught

Because executive is only a label, how the course is taught decides which rules apply. An executive MBA taught face to face on weekends is regular study, because regular study is the face-to-face mode. An executive MBA taught fully over the internet is an online course, and it faces the same recognition test as any other.

So ask one question first: how is it taught? The answer tells you which list to check on the UGC-DEB site and which exam rules apply.

If a course mixes the two, ask which of the three modes it is run under. Get the answer in writing, because it decides everything else.

If a course is run in distance mode, check the ODL list instead of the online one.

Recognition, by how it is taught

Once you know how a course is taught, you know where to check it. The name on the brochure does not change this.

A face-to-face course is not on the UGC-DEB list, because that list covers online and distance study only. So for a campus executive MBA, ask the college about its own standing.

How exams work

For an online MBA, the rules on exams are set. For an executive MBA taught on campus, the college sets them, so ask.

An online exam does not have to be at a centre. Regulation 15(C)(1) allows a secure online test or a proctored exam.

For an executive MBA on campus, ask where exams are held and how often. If you travel for work, that answer matters.

  • WhereOnline, with security, or proctored. Proctoring can be done by technology.
  • WhoYour identity is checked by biometrics against Aadhaar or another ID.
  • How marks splitAt most 30 per cent from coursework, at least 70 per cent from the end-of-term exam.

Shorter is not lighter

An executive MBA is sometimes shorter than a regular one. That is the college's choice, and the rules do not set it. An online MBA has no such choice: it must carry the same credits and the same minimum length as the college's campus MBA.

So if an executive course is shorter, ask how many credits it carries, and how that compares with the college's regular MBA. A shorter course is not a lighter one if it packs the same work into less time.

You may also see an 80-credit figure quoted for online MBAs. That number belongs to the rule for postgraduate diplomas, not the MBA.

Cost and time

Online MBAs on Sidenotes cost ₹1,57,500 to ₹2,19,400 paid upfront, or ₹1,75,000 to ₹2,43,400 paid each semester. Executive MBA fees are set by each college and are not on Sidenotes, so compare the specific course you are offered.

Time is easier to pin down. An online MBA must carry the same credits and minimum duration as the college's campus MBA.

That four-year window helps if work gets busy for a term. You can slow down without dropping out.

For an executive MBA, count the cost of any campus days as well: travel, stays and leave from work.

  • Online MBATwo years at minimum, and up to four years to finish.
  • Executive MBALength set by the college. Ask about travel and any campus days too.

What the room gives you

Some people choose an executive MBA for the people in the room. Weekend classes on campus put you beside other managers, and that can be the point.

An online course may include live sessions, but it does not put you in a room. If meeting peers in person matters to you, count it as part of the choice, not an extra. If it does not, an online course lets you study around work and travel.

Ask how many campus days there are, and whether they are fixed or can be moved.

Who each one suits

Neither is better in general. Each suits a different kind of week.

If you are unsure, start with your week. Count the hours you can give, and the days you can travel.

  • Online MBAPeople who need to study around work and travel, with exams that can be taken online.
  • Executive MBA on campusPeople who can attend set campus days and want time with peers in person.

How to choose

Career stage and budget settle most choices, once the questions with clear answers are out of the way.

  1. Ask how it is taughtFace to face, fully online, or a mix.
  2. Check recognition for that modeOn the UGC-DEB list, for your session.
  3. Price two full yearsIncluding travel and time away from work for any campus days.
  4. Decide what you want from the classIf meeting other managers in person is the point, an online course will not supply it.

Questions to ask an executive MBA college

Five answers tell you what an executive MBA really is. Ask for each one in writing.

Keep the replies together. They let you set two courses side by side on the same terms.

  2. Which mode is it run under?Regular, distance or online.
  3. What credits and length?Compared with the college's regular MBA.

Questions people ask

Neither is a ranked category. Executive is not a term in UGC's rules, so it depends on how the course is taught: face to face it is regular study, fully online it is an online course.

That is the college's rule, not UGC's. Ask the college you are applying to, and keep its reply in writing.

Not by UGC rules. Where a college asks for a CAT, MAT, XAT or CMAT score, that is its own admission rule.

If it is taught fully online, it is an online course and needs UGC recognition for that course and session. Check the UGC-DEB list in Online mode.

It can be, because length is the college's choice for an executive course. An online MBA must keep the same credits and minimum length as the college's campus MBA, with up to double that time to finish.
