What the headline MBA fee leaves out

Short answer

An online MBA's total fee is often more than its headline fee. Some fees cover books, exams and convocation, while others add exam and project fees on top, as NMIMS does. So get every charge in writing before you pay.

Key takeaways

  • Inclusions differOne fee covers books, exams and convocation, while another adds exam and project fees on top.
  • Re-sits cost againWhere exams are charged per subject, a subject you sit twice is paid for twice.
  • The rules help youUGC makes each university publish every part of its fee before admissions open.

What does an online MBA total fee include?

If you are comparing online MBAs, the first fee you see is rarely the whole story. Some universities fold everything into one figure. Others quote teaching first and add the rest later.

The full costs on Sidenotes already add in every charge each university publishes. The table shows what sits inside each one, so you can see what is still open to ask.

Full cost of an online MBA at each university
  • Amity University Online₹2,07,000
  • Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune₹1,89,400
  • Manipal University Jaipur₹1,75,000
  • NMIMS₹2,19,400

The full cost for the whole two-year course. Paying upfront or by semester can change it.

What each full cost includes
UniversityFull cost, and what it includes
Manipal University Jaipur₹1,75,000, stated as all inclusive
Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth₹1,89,400, with books, exams, the project and convocation

What UGC rules do not cover

UGC's 2020 rules for online courses cover credits, length, exams and what is printed on the degree. They say nothing about fees, convocation, transcripts or migration certificates. So no rule tells a college to quote one all-in number, and no rule caps what its papers cost.

That is why fee pages differ so much. The 2023 rules on student grievances do require each college to publish every part of its fee before admissions open, which gives you the list to ask for.

How the way you pay changes the total

The same course can cost different amounts depending on how you pay. Paying upfront is cheaper at every college here. At Manipal University Jaipur it saves ₹17,500, at Amity University Online ₹18,200, at NMIMS ₹24,000 and at Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth ₹10,000.

So a headline fee only makes sense once you know which route it is for. Ask for the total on the route you plan to use.

  • Paid upfrontThe lowest total, with one large payment at the start.
  • Paid each semesterSmaller payments over two years, and the highest total.

Which charges can sit outside the fee?

Three kinds of charge most often sit outside a headline fee. NMIMS lists all three. Its tuition is ₹1,96,000, and exams, the project and processing add ₹23,400 to that.

Amity University Online lists an application fee of ₹6,100, and its two payment routes treat it differently. So ask whether it comes off the total or sits on top. Where a university lists no exam or project fee, that does not prove there is none. It means you need to ask.

  • Exam feesOften charged per subject. At NMIMS it is ₹800 for each of 24 subjects, or ₹19,200 in all.
  • Project feeCharged for the final project. NMIMS lists ₹3,000 for it.
  • Admission chargesAn application or processing fee paid at the start, such as ₹1,200 at NMIMS.

What does a repeat exam cost?

This is the charge most people forget to budget for. Where exams are charged per subject, a re-sit is charged again. At NMIMS each attempt costs ₹800 per subject.

You also have time on your side. UGC sets the longest time to finish at double the minimum, so a two-year MBA can run up to four years. A subject you defer is a cost you defer with it.

Ask too when a re-sit can be taken. A long wait can push back your finish date, and with it any plan that depends on the degree.

  • Ask per subjectWhat one exam attempt costs, and whether the price stays the same for a re-sit.
  • Ask about timeHow long you have to finish, and whether any fee applies after two years.

What do you pay after you finish?

The degree and its papers often carry their own charges. Each university sets its own prices, and few put them on the fee page. Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth is one exception, because its fee includes convocation.

Prices published by other universities show the kind of charge to expect. Treat them as examples, not a standard.

Charges only some students pay

Three more charges depend on what you do with the degree, not on where you studied. Budget for the ones that fit your plans.

  • Transcripts sent abroadThe University of Delhi charges ₹500 per transcript emailed to WES.
  • Migration certificateNeeded to join another university. ₹500 at Delhi within ten years, ₹1,000 after.
  • Apostille or attestationFor use abroad, handled through agencies the Ministry of External Affairs appoints.

What must a university tell you before you join?

You do not have to guess. Under the UGC rules on student grievances, 2023, every university must publish its admission details at least 60 days before admissions open. These rules cover online students too.

The details must include each part of the fee and how it is paid. They must also say how much is refunded if you withdraw, and by when. If a university asks for more than it published, or holds back a refund that is due, you can complain on its online grievance system.

  • Published upfrontEvery fee, deposit and charge, the terms of payment, and the refund rules.
  • A way to complainAn online grievance system, a student committee, and an ombudsperson for appeals.

Three questions to ask about each charge

For every charge on a college's list, three questions settle what it will really cost you. Ask them in writing.

  1. Is it inside the fee or on top?A registration or application fee may come off the total, or be added to it.
  2. Is it paid once, or each time?Exam fees are often per subject and per attempt.
  3. When is it due?A charge raised in the last term is the one least likely to be planned for.

How to get the full number in writing

A few emails before your first payment settle most of this. Ask in writing, so you have the answers on record.

Keep the replies with your admission letter. A written answer about a re-sit fee is worth having two years later, when the person who gave it may have moved on.

  1. Ask for every charge, semester by semesterIncluding exams, the project and any application or processing fee.
  2. Ask what a re-sit costsPer subject, and whether the price changes over time.
  3. Ask what the degree and transcripts costConvocation, marksheets, transcripts, and whether convocation is already in the fee.
  4. Ask how refunds workWhat you get back if you withdraw, and the dates that apply.
  5. Keep every replyA written answer is what you hold the university to later.

Questions people ask

It depends on the university. Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth includes exams in its fee, while NMIMS charges ₹800 per subject on top of tuition. Where a university lists no exam fee, ask before you assume there is none.

Where exams are charged per subject, yes. At NMIMS each attempt costs ₹800 per subject. Ask each university what a re-sit costs before you join.

Sometimes. Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth includes convocation in its fee. Elsewhere it is often a separate charge, such as ₹600 for a master's at IGNOU.

Under the UGC rules on student grievances, 2023, asking for more than the published fee is a grievance. Raise it on the university's online grievance system, and keep your written fee schedule as evidence.

No UGC rule defines or caps one, so it covers whatever the college says it covers. Ask whether it comes off the full cost or sits on top, because the two are easy to confuse.
