Why do online MBA fees look so different?
If you are comparing online MBAs, the figures can look further apart than they are. Each college leads with a different price. Manipal University Jaipur leads with its semester-wise total, while Amity University Online leads with its upfront price.
So a fair comparison starts by putting every course on the same footing. The chart shows the full cost each college leads with. The sections below show how those figures move once you compare them the same way.
None of this means a college is hiding anything. Each one simply quotes the figure it wants to lead with. Your job is to line them up the same way.
The full cost for the whole two-year course. Paying upfront or by semester can change it.
Why a semester fee misleads
The most common mistake is mixing units. A semester fee set beside a full cost makes one course look like a fraction of the other. A first-year fee set beside a two-year total does the same thing, more quietly.
Turn every figure into a full two-year cost on the same route before you compare anything.
- Semester feeOne of four payments. It is not the price of the course.
- Full costThe whole two-year course, paid one way, with every listed charge.
A fair online MBA fees comparison
Each college here has a cheaper route and a dearer one. Paid upfront, the spread from lowest to highest is ₹61,900. Paid each semester, it is ₹68,400.
Set each college's upfront price against the others'. Then do the same for semester-wise prices. Mixing the two makes one course look cheaper than it is.
| University | Lowest total | Highest total |
|---|---|---|
| Manipal University Jaipur | ₹1,57,500 upfront | ₹1,75,000 each semester |
| Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth | ₹1,79,400 paid in full | ₹1,89,400 each semester |
| Amity University Online | ₹2,07,000 upfront | ₹2,25,200 each semester |
| NMIMS | ₹2,19,400 one time | ₹2,43,400 each semester |
Totals include every charge each university lists. See ways to pay for an online MBA.
Add what the fee leaves out
A fair comparison counts the same charges on both sides. NMIMS adds its exam, project and processing fees into its total. Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth includes books, exams, the project and convocation. Others list fewer charges, which means there is more to ask.
Where a college lists no exam or project fee, that is not proof there is none. Ask, and set the answer beside the fee before you rank anything.
- ExamsInside the fee, or charged per subject, and what a re-sit costs.
- The projectWhether the final project carries its own fee.
- After you finishConvocation, transcripts and marksheets, often priced on their own.
What each fee includes
Two fees can look close and still cover different things. Set what is inside each one beside the figure, so you compare like with like.
| University | What it includes |
|---|---|
| Manipal University Jaipur | Stated as all inclusive |
| Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth | Books, exams, the project and convocation |
| Amity University Online | The upfront price; exam and project fees not stated |
| NMIMS | Tuition plus exams, the project and processing |
Comparing on the all-in figure
The fairest comparison uses the all-in figure: every charge on the same route. NMIMS lists its charges outside tuition in full, so its all-in figure can be added up to the rupee. For colleges that list less, the published figure may not be the whole cost.
So rank the colleges on what is listed first, then ask each one in writing what else applies. Their written replies turn a rough ranking into a real one.
What does a higher fee buy?
A higher fee does not buy a longer or heavier degree. UGC requires an online MBA to carry the same credits and minimum duration as the same college's campus MBA. So every course here runs two years.
The differences lie elsewhere. The subjects on offer vary a lot from one college to the next. So do what the fee includes and how exams are run. At Manipal University Jaipur, for example, semester-end exams are computer based and proctored online from home.
So if two colleges offer the subject you want, the price gap tells you about the college's own choices, not about the size of the degree. Weigh those choices against what they cost you.
- The same by ruleCredits and minimum duration match its campus MBA.
- Different by choiceSubjects offered, what the fee includes, and how exams are run.
How exams are run
How exams work differs between colleges, and it changes what you need at home. At Manipal University Jaipur, semester-end exams are computer based and proctored online, taken from home. You need a laptop or desktop with a working webcam and an internet connection.
Ask each other college how it runs its exams before you settle on cost alone.
- From homeProctored online with a webcam, where the college allows it.
- ElsewhereAsk where you would sit them, since travel adds to the cost.
Where the real differences show up
Once costs are on the same basis, the differences that remain are about the course, not the price. These three matter most for most people.
- SubjectsSome colleges offer many specialisations, others only a few.
- What the fee coversBooks, exams and convocation are included at some colleges, extra at others.
- How exams runFrom home with proctoring, or at a centre you travel to.
Check the subject before the price
Not every college offers every subject. So the cheapest course overall may not teach the subject you came for. Start with the subject, keep the colleges that offer it, and then compare their costs.
One thing makes this easier. On Sidenotes, each college's full cost is the same for every subject it offers. Your subject decides your shortlist, while the college sets the price. You can see every online MBA by subject and narrow it down from there.
Recognition comes before cost
A cheap course that is not recognised for your session is not a saving. Recognition is recorded for each session and lasts five years, so check the course on the UGC-DEB list for the year and session you join.
Some years show a note that an updated list will come soon. If yours does, ask the college in writing for the record that covers your session.
Time is part of the cost
An online MBA runs for two years at least, and you can take up to four to finish. That extra time is real flexibility, but it is not free. Where exams are charged per subject, a subject you sit twice is paid for twice.
So when you compare, ask each college what a re-sit costs. At NMIMS it is ₹800 per subject. A cheaper course with costly re-sits can end up dearer.
A fair comparison in five steps
Work through these in order, and keep each university's answers in writing.
Do the steps in this order. Starting with price and working back to a subject is how people end up with a course they cannot use.
- Pick your subjectKeep only the colleges that offer it.
- Choose one way of payingCompare them all upfront, or all semester-wise.
- Add the charges each fee leaves outExams, the project, and the papers after you finish.
- Check what the fee includesBooks, exams and convocation differ from college to college.
