Ways to reduce the cost of an online MBA

Short answer

The biggest saving is usually how you pay, more than any online MBA scholarship. Paying upfront cuts ₹10,000 to ₹24,000 off the semester-wise total at the online MBAs on Sidenotes. Concessions and avoiding paying twice save more.

Where can you save on an online MBA?

If you want to bring the cost down, most of the saving comes before you pay a rupee. The way you pay matters more than any later trick.

The table lists each way to save, with an example of what it is worth. The sections below explain each one.

None of these savings asks you to bargain. Each one is a choice you make, or a rule you use, before or during the course.

Ways to save, with examples
How to saveWhat it can be worth
Pay the full fee upfront₹10,000 to ₹24,000, depending on the university

The savings side by side

Here is what paying upfront saves at each college, against paying each semester, and the yearly price where one is listed. Use it to see how much the payment route alone is worth.

Savings by college

Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth₹10,000Not listed

Pay upfront, if your budget allows

Every college here charges less if you pay the full fee at once. At Manipal University Jaipur the upfront price is ₹1,57,500, against ₹1,75,000 paid each semester. That is ₹17,500 saved.

Amity University Online's upfront price is ₹18,200 below its semester total. At NMIMS the gap is ₹24,000, and at Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth it is ₹10,000.

Two colleges list a yearly price. At Manipal University Jaipur it is ₹1,66,250, which is 5 per cent off the semester total. At NMIMS it is ₹2,33,400, against ₹2,43,400 paid each semester. If you cannot pay everything at once, paying yearly still saves money.

Ask the other colleges whether they offer it. A route that is not listed may still exist.

  • Before you pay upfrontRead the refund terms, since more of your money is committed.
  • If you cannotYearly payment, where offered, still costs less than paying each semester.

Check what you are paying for

A saving only counts if you compare like with like. Some fees include books, exams and convocation; others add them later. Check what is inside each figure before you treat one as cheaper.

Is there an online MBA scholarship for you?

Some colleges cut the fee for some groups. NMIMS lists 20 per cent off for armed forces, paramilitary and other forces personnel, and their dependents. If you might qualify, ask before you pay.

Some scholarships are advertised as limited offers. Ask for the terms in writing: how much, on which route, and whether it applies every semester or only once. A discount that applies once is worth far less than one that runs for two years.

Do not confuse discounts with scholarships. Manipal University Jaipur's 10 per cent and 5 per cent are payment discounts. They depend only on how you pay, and anyone can use them.

Ask too whether a scholarship can be combined with an upfront discount, or whether you must choose one. The answer changes which route is cheapest for you.

Claim the tax deduction on loan interest

If you borrow for the course, the interest can lower your tax. Section 129 of the Income-tax Act, 2025 allows a deduction for interest on a higher education loan from a bank or other approved lender. It runs for up to eight years.

The deduction is not available under the default tax regime. So it helps only if you opt out of that regime. The guide to paying for an online MBA explains who can claim it.

A lower fee does not mean a weaker degree

It is fair to worry that a cheaper course cuts corners. UGC's rules stop that in two ways, so price is not a sign of quality here. The differences between colleges lie in subjects, what the fee covers and how exams run.

  • Same creditsAn online course must carry the same credits and minimum length as the college's campus course.
  • Same statusAn online degree counts as equal to the campus one when the course is recognised.

Use the time you are given

An online MBA runs for at least two years, and you can take up to four to finish. That window can save you money. A term where you cannot pay or cannot study need not end the course, and a subject you defer is a cost you defer with it.

The catch is re-sits. Where exams are charged per subject, each extra attempt costs again, so time is only a saving if you pass first time.

Avoid paying twice

Two charges come back if things go wrong, and both can be avoided. Where exams are charged per subject, a re-sit is charged again, at ₹800 per subject at NMIMS. Documents are the other. A transcript and a consolidated marksheet are separate orders, each priced on its own.

Both are small amounts on their own. Over two years, and across several papers and subjects, they add up to a real sum you never needed to spend.

  • ExamsPrepare to pass each subject first time, since each attempt is charged.
  • DocumentsWork out how many copies you need, then order them all in one go.

Costs after the course

Some costs come after the teaching ends, and they are easy to forget. Plan for them, because they are only avoidable if you know they are coming.

Papers after the course are charged per copy. At Pondicherry University a transcript is ₹1,000 plus ₹500 a page, so a second order costs that again. So list who will want papers, now and in the next few years: employers, WES or another college. Order every copy in one go, one sealed set for each body that asks. Ask whether the college emails transcripts to WES; the University of Delhi does, for ₹500 each. And keep one opened copy, so you never break a seal to read your own marks.

  • ConvocationPaying the fee, not attending, gets your degree issued. IGNOU charges ₹600 for a master's.
  • TranscriptsPriced per copy, and per page at some colleges.
  • Migration certificateOnly if you join another university. ₹500 at Delhi within ten years.

Get a written fee schedule

The cheapest course is the one whose costs you know in advance. Ask for these in writing before you pay anything.

Keep the replies with your receipts. A written schedule also helps if a charge is ever disputed.

  1. A semester-wise scheduleEvery charge, and when each one falls due.
  2. Whether the fee is fixedFor the whole course, or open to change.
  3. What a re-sit costsPer subject and per attempt.
  4. How refunds workWhat you get back if you withdraw, and by when.

Pay only the college

The cheapest mistake to avoid is paying the wrong person. In its August 2020 notice to students, UGC says no university may run online courses through a franchise with private coaching centres. Admission should go through the college itself.

A centre that offers you a lower price than the college's own is a warning sign, not a saving. If the admission does not go through the college, you may pay twice: once to the centre, and again to fix it.

  1. Apply to the college itselfUse its own admission process, not a centre acting for it.
  2. Check the details on its websiteUGC requires each recognised college to post its details there.
  3. Pay through official channels onlyAnd keep every receipt you are given.
  4. Report anything odd to UGCUGC asks students to report any college that breaks these rules.
