Online MBA and part-time MBA compared

Short answer

Online MBA vs part-time MBA comes down to how each is taught. A part-time MBA taught face to face is regular, campus study under UGC rules. An online MBA is taught fully over the internet and is recognised course by course. Credits stay level either way.

Key takeaways

  • Taught differentlyPart-time is face to face, so it counts as regular study. Online is fully over the internet.
  • Same creditsAn online MBA keeps the credits and minimum length of the campus MBA.
  • Different recordsOnline MBAs are on the UGC-DEB list. Campus courses are not, because it covers online and distance only.

Online MBA vs part-time MBA: what each one is

If you work full time and want an MBA, these are the two routes most people weigh. Start with what the rules say. UGC's 2020 rules name three modes: regular, distance and online. Part-time is not one of them.

A part-time MBA taught face to face is regular study, because the rules define regular study by face-to-face teaching. Meeting less often, such as on weekends or evenings, does not make it a separate mode. An online MBA is a mode of its own: the whole course is taught over the internet.

  • Online MBAA mode UGC defines. Taught fully over the internet, and recognised course by course.
  • Part-time MBARegular, campus study that meets less often. Not a mode of its own.

Attendance and timetable

Attendance is the real difference. It decides where you need to be, and when.

An online course has no campus to reach, so a late meeting or a work trip does not cost you a class. A part-time course needs you in a room at set times, every week, for the length of the course. Ask an online college how its live sessions are timed, and whether they are recorded.

Same credits, same minimum length

Neither route is a shortcut. Regulation 13(A)(4) says an online course at a college other than an Open University must keep the same credits and the same minimum length as its campus version. A part-time MBA is a campus course, so it follows the campus rules too.

Where the online route differs is the time you get to finish. You can take up to double the minimum, so a two-year MBA allows four years. You may also see an 80-credit figure quoted for online MBAs. That number belongs to the rule for postgraduate diplomas, not the MBA.

  • Online MBASame credits as the campus MBA, with up to double the time to finish.
  • Part-time MBACampus rules. Ask the college how long you have to finish.

Who can offer an online MBA

Most colleges can offer a course online only if they already run it on campus, and at least one batch has graduated from it. Open Universities are the exception.

So an online MBA usually sits beside a campus MBA at the same college, with the same credits. If you are offered an online MBA, it is fair to ask about the campus course it mirrors, and how long that course has run.

How exams work

For an online MBA, the rules on exams are set. For a part-time MBA on campus, the college sets them, so ask where and when exams are held.

An online exam does not have to be at a centre. Regulation 15(C)(1) allows a secure online test or a proctored exam, and proctoring can be done by technology. That matters if you travel for work.

  • WhereOnline, with security, or proctored. Proctoring can be done by technology.
  • WhoYour identity is checked by biometrics against Aadhaar or another ID.
  • How marks splitAt most 30 per cent from coursework, at least 70 per cent from the end-of-term exam.

Total cost once travel is counted

Online MBAs on Sidenotes cost ₹1,57,500 to ₹2,19,400 paid upfront, or ₹1,75,000 to ₹2,43,400 paid each semester. There is no verified part-time MBA fee on Sidenotes, so this guide does not set the two side by side on price.

What a fee leaves out is the cost of getting there. A part-time course adds travel and time every week, for two years or more. Nobody publishes that total, because it depends on your city and your hours. Work it out for yourself before you compare two fees.

  • The feeAsk each college for its full cost in writing, on the same payment route.
  • TravelFares and time for every class, every week, across the whole course.
  • Time off workAny classes or exams that clash with your working hours.

How each one is recognised

The two routes leave different records. An online MBA must appear on the UGC-DEB list, for its mode, year and session. A campus course will not be on that list at all, because the list covers online and distance study only. That is not a flaw. It is a different record.

Recognition on the list lasts five years and is recorded for each session, so check the session you would join. A screenshot from a counsellor is not proof.

What you gain from being in the room

Here the rules run out, and it is better to say so. UGC's rules cover recognition, credits, length, exams and what goes on a degree. They say nothing about classmates, discussion in class or the contacts a group builds.

What they do describe is the shape of each mode. An online course is built to work without a room. A part-time campus course puts you in one by default.

That leaves a judgement, not a fact. If you already have the contacts you need, the room is a nice extra. If you are changing city, role or industry, weekly time with a local group is something an online course does not give you.

If your job moves

A part-time course ties you to one campus. If your job moves you to another city, the course may not move with you. An online course has no campus, so a transfer does not end it.

Nothing in UGC's 2020 rules covers a change of mode partway through a course. So if you might need to switch from part-time to online, ask the college in writing before you join.

Entry rules

No UGC rule requires an entrance exam for an online MBA. Where a college asks for a CAT, MAT, XAT or CMAT score, that is its own admission rule. A part-time MBA's entry rules are set by the college, so ask for them.

  • Online MBAA bachelor's degree, and a DEB-ID linked to your Academic Bank of Credits ID before you enrol.
  • Part-time MBASet by the college. Ask for its rules in writing.

How to choose

Location settles most of this choice, so start there. Then check the record and the costs.

  1. Time the trip at class hourTravel from work to the campus once, on a weekday evening, before you trust a part-time timetable.
  2. Check the record for your routeThe UGC-DEB list for an online MBA; the college's standing for a campus course.
  3. Ask how exams are heldWhere, when, and how often you would need to travel.
  4. Price the whole courseThe fee on the same payment route, plus travel for a part-time course.
  5. Decide how much the room mattersIf meeting peers in person is the point, an online course will not supply it.
