Is an online MBA accepted by companies? How employers check it

Short answer

Yes, an online MBA is accepted by companies when UGC lists the course for your session. UGC's rules treat it as equal to a campus MBA. When a company checks your degree, it confirms that the college gave it to you, through NAD or the college's own office.

Is an online MBA accepted by companies?

If you are about to start an online MBA, you may worry that employers will not accept it. Two separate questions sit behind that worry. The first is what the law says about your degree. The second is how a company checks it when you join.

On the first question, the answer is clear. UGC, the University Grants Commission, oversees universities in India. Under Regulation 22 of its rules, an online degree counts as equal to the same degree earned on campus, when UGC lists the course for your session. UGC repeated this rule in a public notice in 2022.

The second question is about checking. A company's check, often called background verification, asks one thing: did this college really give this degree to this person?

  • What the rule saysA listed online MBA is equal to the same MBA earned on campus, under Regulation 22.
  • What the company checksIt checks that your college gave you the degree, against the college's own record.

What makes your online MBA count

Regulation 22 has two conditions, and both must be met. First, the degree must be one that UGC lists, such as an MBA. Second, the university must be allowed to run that course online for the session you joined.

The second condition is the one to check. UGC keeps one official list of every course that universities may run online, by year and session. You can open it yourself on the UGC-DEB website. For the July 2026 session, it lists 125 universities for an online MBA. All four colleges on Sidenotes are among them. See the UGC approved online MBA university list for the full list.

Save a dated copy of your university's row for your session. If an employer ever asks whether your course was recognised, that copy is your answer.

How companies check your degree

There are three common ways for a company to check your degree. Each one goes back to the college's own record, which is why employers trust them. A photo of your degree proves little on its own.

A company may run the check through its own HR team or through an outside agency. Either way, the check ends at one of these three places.

  • Through NADNAD is the national online record of degrees, and a check through it needs your consent.
  • Through the collegeYour college's verification office confirms your degree when an employer pays for a check.
  • Through your papersYour degree or provisional certificate, with every year's marksheets, supports the check.

Checking through NAD or the college

NAD stands for the National Academic Depository, the national online record of degrees. Under Regulation 16(1) of UGC's rules, every online degree must be uploaded to NAD. A check through NAD only happens with your consent. Nobody can search a database for your name. Once you agree, the check is completed within 24 hours. This is the quickest way, as long as your college has uploaded your degree.

Universities also run their own verification offices. These offices accept paid requests from companies, agencies and embassies. Anna University's verification office is one example. This way works for any degree the college gave, but it adds a fee and a wait. If your college has not uploaded your degree to NAD, this is the way your employer will check it.

Ask your college what its office charges and how long it takes. Then you can tell your employer what to expect.

What the check looks at

Whichever way an employer uses, the check compares your details with the college's record. The details in the table must agree. If one of them does not match, the check can take longer.

Will the company see that you studied online?

It may. Under Regulation 16(2) of UGC's rules, the back of every degree, certificate and marksheet must show how you studied. It must also show when you joined, when you finished and where you took your exams. The front of the degree varies from one university to another.

But the mode of study is not what a background check tests. It tests whether the college gave you the degree. And under Regulation 22, a listed online MBA counts as equal to a campus MBA. So the way you studied is not a reason for a check to fail.

In an interview, it helps to say plainly that you studied online while working. You can show your university's row on UGC's list for your session if anyone asks.

Government jobs and jobs abroad

Government jobs set their own rules in the notice for each post. The UPSC Civil Services notice, for example, asks what kind of university gave the degree, and it does not mention the mode of study. Read the notice for your own post, in the year you apply.

Jobs abroad work differently. An evaluator such as WES wants your papers sent directly by your college, not a copy that you send yourself. Some countries also want your papers attested. The Ministry of External Affairs handles this through agencies it appoints.

If your degree is late or a detail is wrong

Your degree may arrive several months after your results. Most Indian universities hold convocation once a year, so a wait of six to eighteen months is normal. Until then, your provisional certificate is your proof that you have finished. College verification offices, such as Anna University's, check a provisional certificate for a new job. An employer may still ask for the final degree, but that is its own policy, not the law.

A name spelled differently on your degree and your ID can slow a check down. A date that does not match can do the same. The correction has to come from your college, because the record belongs to the college. So compare your degree and marksheets with your ID as soon as they arrive, and ask the college for any correction in writing.

Before you start a new job

A few steps in the week before you join make the check quick. If your college has issued your degree into DigiLocker, it counts as the original in India. See degree verification through DigiLocker for the digital way to share your degree.
